‘Ex Occultus: The Sword of Peleus’ – Comic Book Review

Back with another short comic is Jesse Young, author of The Daring Adventures of Android Jones and Here We Go, among others. I’ve enjoyed Jesse’s prior work and was excited to read his new comic, Ex Occultus: The Sword of Peleus, especially after he mentioned it was Indiana Jones and The X-Files rolled into one, set in the 19th century. Anyone that knows me knows how big of a fan I am of both those franchises. I even have Mulder’s “I Want to Believe” poster and Indy’s fedora. Well, I used to have the fedora. It got run over by a boat while re-enacting a scene from one of the movies for a film class I was in. Long story.

Anyway, back to the comic. The Sword of Peleus is fun for comic book readers of all ages to enjoy. It follows Wakefield and Hollander, two explorers and preservationists who have been hired to retrieve the Sword of Peleus for the Royal Geographic Society. It serves as a great introduction to the characters and the world. Wakefield and Hollander remind me of Indy and his father in The Last Crusade. Jesse promises more adventures still to come for Wakefield and Hollander, and if they’re anything like The Sword of Peleus, they’re going to be pretty good. I, for one, can’t wait to read them and find out more about Wakefield and Hollander’s friendship as they collect more artifacts around the world.

One of the things I love most about reading comic books is seeing how authors, whose work I enjoy, progress through their careers. I’ve read a few titles from Mr. Young now, and it’s been cool to see his growth as a writer and collaborator. Be sure to check out all of his prior work on his website in addition to The Sword of Peleus. They’re the perfect length for comic book fans like me who are busy and need a quick fix.

Collaborating with Jesse this time around is Joanna Estep on art, Paulina Ganucheau on colors, and Deron Bennett on letters. Young, along with Robert James Russell, created The Sword of Peleus, a beautiful and vibrant comic that catches your eye immediately. Estep and Ganacheau work well together. Each panel draws you in and keeps you scrolling; before you know it, you’re at the end, waiting for the next adventure in Wakefield and Hollander’s lives. Another successful project for Jesse Young and company.
