Back to ‘Back to the Future:’ The Starting Line – January 21, 2015

October 21, 2015, was the date that Doc Brown, Marty McFly, and Jennifer Parker visited in Back to the Future: Part II, and, by no mere coincidence, 2015 is the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future. (It’s a nice round number, after all.)  For that reason, on the 21st of every month leading up to the big day, Fanbase Press invites you to join actor Samm Levine (Freaks and Geeks, Selfie) and Fanbase Press Senior Contributor Drew Siragusa as they revisit the locations used in the BTTF films. Along the way, they will be joined by contributors writing about what Back to the Future means to them and how it has influenced their lives over the past three decades.

It is nearly impossible to mention Back to the Future in my family without also bringing up the period I spent in the hospital. After a severe health incident, I was stuck in an extended hospital stay where I spent my time watching the movies. To say that I was obsessed is an understatement; every single day I was there I watched at least one of them. (Sometimes, I would even watch it again after the tape was rewound.) Since then, I have remained fascinated with these movies and seen them each hundreds of times.

At that point, nothing had struck a chord with me quite like these movies (nor has anything since). Back to the Future is what inspired my fascination for time travel, which has since expanded to include things such as Doctor Who and Relativistic Physics. The idea of visiting . . . or revisiting past experiences has been something I have been unable to shake since watching it. It also sparked my interest in storytelling. I hoped that someday I would create something that means this much to other people.

Both 1955 and 2015 felt so far away when I was a kid. Now, as an adult, 1985 seems far away (yet somehow those 30 years flew by fast). While the setting(s) of these movies are now dated and the future we live in is nothing like the future predicted, the story is just as relevant as ever. The struggle to accept that our actions have consequences and the realization that our parents are just like us is part of growing up.

So, please join us over the next few months as we celebrate the 30thanniversary, as well as finally reaching the future on October 21, 2015. Here is to another 30 years!
